Tarangire National Park

Overview

Tarangire is famous for the giant baobab trees and the sheer abundance of elephant herds in its plains. This land has its own magic and it should definitely be included in your northern Tanzanian circuit safari. It’s an easy drive from Arusha or Lake Manyara and your route can continue on to Ngorongoro crater and the Serengeti.

The Tarangire National park offers one of the greatest concentrations of game in Tanzania. The permanent water of the Tarangire river attracts thousands of animals, with zebra and wildebeest using the river as a refuge. Among its habitats are buffalos, impala, gazelle, fringe-eared oryx and gerenuk, while its swamps give shelter to 550 varieties of birds. The climb tree lions and leopards add anxiety to the game as they disguise among the branches.

Inside the park, in addition to the game drives, you can enjoy the view of life from a hot air balloon. In the surrounding conservation area you can do a walking safari accompanied by experienced rangers or an exciting night game drive. Another proposal is to include a day trip to Massai and Barabaig villages, or search for the ancient rock paintings in the vicinity of Kolo on the Dodoma road.

Tarangire can be visited all year round, holding the biggest concentration of animals during the dry season from June to September.

For your accommodation you can choose among lodges, luxury tented camps or basic camps in and around the park. The lodges and camps in the conservation area give a percentage of their income to the local community. The villagers use this revenue to construct water pumps and boreholes, and to maintain the schools and dispensaries.

Guided by our experience we have prepared itineraries that include Tarangire and cover the northern circuit areas. Have a look at our proposals and If you prefer another combination of places and activities, contact us and we will be happy to draw up a unique program for you.
