Oldonyo Lengai is an active volcano and has had a major influence on the development of the area. Its ash has blown westwards into the plains and helped shape the landscape and ecology. Sporadically the volcano erupts, sending small streams of grey lava down the crater rim and spits hot ash high into the air. Oldonyo Lengai is the only active volcano in the area, having erupted in 1966 and 1983.

Oldonyo Lengai ist one of Tanzania’s most challenging and spectacular climbes. It is undertaken overnight so you can watch the sunrise over the Rift Valley escarpment.
